Many citizens visited Peace Park and Hypocenter Park from the morning to mourn the victims of the atomic bomb, and at the Peace Memorial Ceremony, Nagasaki Mayor Suzuki appealed to world leaders to show a concrete path toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. 80th Anniversary Summer of Mourning for the Atomic Bomb Victims Nagasaki woke up to a morning of prayer 80 years after the atomic bombing. 74,000 people lost their lives in the Nagasaki atomic bombing. The average age of the survivors was over 86 years old. A 79-year-old man who was exposed to radiation in the womb said, "My mother had keloids all over her body and was somehow able to be born despite being exposed to radiation in the womb." "It may seem like peaceful times, but it's a difficult time." A woman who was exposed to the atomic bomb at the age of five said, "I don't want to remember it, even though I was five years old. I remember how miserable I felt, running around like crazy, with no food to eat, and I think war should never be started just because of human greed." A 73-year-old man, a second-generation atomic bomb survivor, said, "I don't think war will ever go away." "Nuclear bombs are something that should never happen." Last year, Teruko Yokoyama, representative director of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, greeted the morning of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing at her home in Nagasaki. Yokoyama Teruko said, "I feel like there are so many people who didn't get to see the 80th anniversary, and that I'm the only one left, with my parents, older sisters, and younger sisters gone, but I still feel that I have to carry out this movement together with young people." Mayor appeals to the world for a concrete path to nuclear abolition ♪ Sunflowers "Don't make it again, for us atomic bomb survivors" In addition to atomic bomb survivors and government officials, the Peace Memorial Ceremony was also attended by ambassadors to Japan from G7 countries and countries involved in the conflict, such as Russia, who refrained from attending last year over Nagasaki City's response to Israel. 11:02 a.m. "Moment of silence" Nagasaki Mayor Suzuki Shiro, in his peace declaration, called on world leaders to show a concrete path to realizing the abolition of nuclear weapons. Mayor Suzuki (Nagasaki Peace Declaration): "We must immediately put an end to this 'force against force'. Conflicts are intensifying in many places due to a vicious cycle of confrontation and division. If we continue like this, we will head towards nuclear war. This threat to the survival of humanity is imminent for each and every one of us living on this planet." He then quoted the UN speech of the late Nagasaki atomic bomb survivor, Senji Yamaguchi. "No more Hiroshimas, no more Nagasakis, no more war, no more hibakusha." This heartfelt cry crystallizes the feelings of the atomic bomb survivors. "We appeal to the government of Japan, the only country to have been bombed in war, to adhere to the peaceful ideals of the Constitution and the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, and to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as soon as possible." The memory of the atomic bombing, passed down through generations. The "Pledge for Peace" by a representative of atomic bomb survivors was made by Hiroshi Nishioka, a Yokohama resident who experienced the atomic bombing at the age of 13 while inside Nagasaki Prefectural Junior High School, located 3.3 kilometers from the hypocenter. He is 93 years old, the oldest survivor to date. Nishioka said, "I escaped unharmed thanks to being crushed under my classmates. My classmates were covered in blood and had knife-sharp broken window glass piercing their bodies." Following the Nobel Peace Prize award to his organization, the Japan Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations, he is determined to further his activities. Nishioka said, "We must never stop this movement toward peace. Our goal is to move it forward and increase the number of our allies. Nuclear weapons must never be used; if they are used, everything will be over. Everyone, let's protect this beautiful Earth." In his address, Prime Minister Ishiba said, "While firmly adhering to the three non-nuclear principles, our country's mission is to lead the international community's efforts toward realizing a world without nuclear war and a world without nuclear weapons. We will continue to make steady efforts, step by step." He also quoted the bell of Urakami Cathedral, restored after 80 years, and the words of Dr. Takashi Nagai, and declared his commitment to achieving lasting peace.
