Nature Walk , Contignac ,South Of France

Cotignac is an affluent, touristy village, quite the opposite of its neighbor Barjols. Yet their history and natural surroundings are similar: nestled at the foot of a cliff over which a river flows, depositing vast quantities of tufa. In Cotignac, the waterfall was diverted westward as early as the Middle Ages to take advantage of the natural cavities and the easily carved rock. The lower waterfall is only accessible via a short out-and-back hike, scheduled for the end of this tour, as both the approach and the waterfall are well-shaded and also quite cool during the hottest hours. The route therefore passes several times through Place Gambetta, where cafés and restaurants beckon visitors to their terraces.
