Has Qatar earned its place among the nations? Through a portrait of the ruling family, this documentary explores the paradoxes of a country whose rise fascinates as much as it frightens. It is a tiny state with outsized ambitions. In three decades, Qatar, a desert territory sandwiched between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has established itself as one of the richest countries in the world. Once a remote Ottoman province and then a British protectorate, the kingdom proclaimed its independence in 1971 through its future emir, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. In 1995, he was overthrown by his son Hamad, who invested in gas exploitation, rapidly modernized the country, and used his vast capital and soft power to strengthen Qatar's influence abroad, ultimately securing the hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Weakened by the Arab Spring—after initially encouraging revolutionary movements, Qatar faced criticism for its support of the radical Muslim Brotherhood—Hamad abdicated in 2013 in favor of his son Tamim. The young sheikh, with his image as the ideal son-in-law, weathered the storms (scandals surrounding the World Cup, but above all, the total embargo imposed by Saudi Arabia and its allies against the country from 2017 to 2021) and, thanks to the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the war in Ukraine, managed to establish himself as an indispensable partner for the West. Sociology and Geopolitics: Through a portrait of the Al-Thani dynasty and three generations of leaders, this documentary offers an insider's account of the destiny of a nation sitting atop the world's largest gas field, propelled onto the global stage by the power of money and skillful diplomacy. With the World Cup kicking off on November 20th, the film immerses viewers in a highly stratified society where the opulence of some (the 300,000 Qataris, 80% of whom are civil servants, who benefit handsomely from the trickle-down effect of wealth) exists alongside the misery of the exploited. Between Bedouin conservatism and Western modernity, between success stories and shadowy underbelly, this film delves into the paradoxes of the kingdom alongside Qataris (including members of the ruling family), international experts, and foreign workers.
