The Benefits of Daily Oil Massages (Abhyanga)
One of the hallmarks of the Ayurvedic tradition is the daily oil massage, known as abhyanga. The video discusses all the reasons why the ancient doctors of India recommended rubbing the body with oil several days a week. Nowadays people are told to take various types of oils internally, such as perles of fish oil, Evening Primrose Oil and other omega-3’s. While they may have some benefit, when you take these oils orally you run the risk of creating bile sludge in the gall bladder as you dump so much fat in the bile at once. The detergents in the bile have to emulsify all the fats you eat for absorption into the bloodstream, so taking in too much fat at one time could overwhelm the bile, turning it into a thick sludge. It’s best to eat good fats in the diet, through the use of high quality olive oil, ghee, avocados, nuts, seeds, milk and milk products and animal proteins such as fish, turkey, lamb and chicken if you are not a vegetarian. And instead of taking these fat perles orally, think how wise the ancient doctors were to recommend applying various types of oils to the entire body, leaving it on for about 20 minutes to fully absorb and then washing it off. The oil goes directly from the skin and into the blood stream, quicker than if you had taken it orally, since it doesn’t have to go through the digestive tract to be digested and absorbed into the blood stream. This is a perfect example of the wisdom of the ancient Ayurvedic seers. The video also discusses how the skin itself can manufacture numerous types of hormones if you give it a drink of oil periodically. That is why the skin is now being reclassified as an endocrine organ, since it plays a huge role in making the majority of the female hormones after menopause, which include not only the female hormones, but thyroid hormones as well as melatonin, cortisol and Vitamin D, a precursor to all the hormones. Applying oil to the skin aids tremendously in the detoxification process — it turns out that the oil, once absorbed through the various layers of the skin systematically enters each of the 7 tissues (blood plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and the reproductive fluids), softening up the toxins being held in each tissue, allowing for their removal. And at the same time it provides nourishment to the 7 tissues as well. As you might have guessed, it also prevents drying and wrinkling of the skin and prevents the overall aging of the body which occurs in the latter years of life, known as the Vata stage of life, where the element of dryness takes over, creating wrinkling of the skin, low hormones (which are made out of fat), pain and stiffness in the joints (the joints need lubrication to work properly and without pain). So rubbing the body with oil prevents this inevitable drying that Vata creates, slowing up the aging process and preventing the aches and pains that might come with old age. The oils also take nutrients into the body, which is why many Abhyanga oils are made with various nutrients, such as Vitamin D, Magnesium and many herbs — the oils facilitate the entrance of these vitamins and herbs directly into every cell of our body, since our cell walls are made of cholesterol and the fats in the oils can carry these invaluable nutrients across the cell wall and deposit them into the cells. And finally the video gives specifics of the best oils to use for the various skin types and how to rub the oil onto the body, starting at the top of the head and working your way downwards, rubbing up and down on the long bones and circular into the joints. Leave the oil on for 20 minutes to allow for optimum absorption into the physiology, then wash off in a bath or shower or you could enter a steam sauna to allow for deeper penetration of the oils. By rubbing the body with oils you will feel the profound effects that come with a daily oil massage. Each time you perform abhyanga to yourself you will feel a definite shift in your health, which is why these daily oil massages have always been at the center of Ayurvedic treatments and will continue to be so for millennia to come.
