A Napoleonic infantryman marched twenty-five to thirty kilometers a day through mud that sank ankle-deep. His daily rations existed only on paper: supply trains lagged behind, foragers returned empty-handed, and the local population hid grain or had already been robbed by the advance guard. The soldier ate horse meat, bark, and knapsack leather. He drank from puddles containing dead horses. He fell asleep on the frozen ground without a coat. He woke up—if he woke up—with dysentery, which killed like a shot.
