According to this narrative, the Pope is a late invention, a product of the Middle Ages, a distortion of early Christianity. “Peter,” they say, “was just another apostle. An equal among equals. Nothing like ‘prince of the apostles’ or, much less, ‘vicar of Christ.’” But what if I told you that this view is not only wrong, but completely subverts the message of the Gospel? Because the truth is that the Bible doesn't treat Peter like just anyone else. It highlights him. It always names him first, always. It changes his name—something God only does when giving a foundational role. It gives him a specific mission. It gives him the keys to the house. Not just any keys, but the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. And he does so by quoting—or at least making an obvious allusion, which any Jew of the time could understand—to a prophecy of Isaiah, which describes the new priesthood that would be established in the New Covenant, where Christ would be king. And this is not up for debate, folks. It's not for nothing that a prominent line of liberal theologians since the end of World War II have tried to argue that this passage in Matthew 16 is not authentic and that it was added later by the Church. A claim that has been refuted countless times. But it's understandable why these theologians wanted to argue it this way: because if the biblical text is accepted as the faithful and authentic reflection of Jesus' words, any rejection by the papacy is flawed.
