Assess Learning, Not Cheating: Refocusing on Best Practices in the AI Era

In the face of generative AI, the tension between online assessment integrity and academic dishonesty risks obscuring what assessments are for: measuring and promoting learning. This presentation argues for a focus on sound pedagogical best practices – specifically, Universal Design for Learning and The Flipped Classroom- to alleviate that tension. I will outline those two best practices. Within that framework, I will show how I use interactive video quizzes with embedded pop-up questions in my online course, which inherently engage students and make outsourcing learning counterproductive. I will also share findings from a pilot student survey on how this assessment approach supported their learning and invite the audience to share other additional strategies. The Bronx EdTech Showcase offers a very special opportunity to gather together and explore some of the most effective and engaging classroom practices. Innovators from the three Bronx CUNY colleges, Lehman College, Hostos, and Bronx Community Colleges, demonstrate their exemplary models for integrating and infusing technology into their fully online, hybrid, and traditional teaching methods.
