Archive: Neutrophil Contribution to Inflammation and Autoimmunity in Rheumatic Disease

Neutrophils are main effector cells playing an essential role in host defense. However, exaggerated neutrophil activation has been linked to inflammation and autoimmunity, including the rheumatic disease systemic lupus erythematosus. In the current presentation, we discuss the basics of neutrophil activation and effector functions, how neutrophils contribute to inflammation and autoimmunity and the clinical utility of assessing neutrophil-derived biomarkers for diagnostic and prognostic purposes in patients with inflammatory autoimmune diseases. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Describe main neutrophil effector functions and how to analyze them 2. Explain how neutrophil programmed necrosis, NETosis, occurs 3. Describe how NET formation contributes to inflammation and autoimmunity 4. Discuss the clinical utility of neutrophil-derived biomarkers in assessment of diagnosis and prognosis in inflammatory autoimmune conditions Christian Lood, Ph.D., assistant professor, Division of Rheumatology, University of Washington 11/18/17 http://depts.washington.edu/labweb/Ed... https://uw.edu/video The University of Washington is committed to ensuring digital accessibility in our services, programs, and activities.
