Gibraltar’s story stretches far beyond its small size. Humans have lived around the Rock since prehistoric times, and some of Europe’s last Neanderthal communities made their home in its caves. In the ancient world, the Rock was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules, a natural marker at the edge of the familiar Mediterranean world. In 711 AD, North African forces crossed the strait and gave the place its name — Jabal Ṭāriq, the Mountain of Tariq — which eventually evolved into “Gibraltar.” The Moors fortified it, the Spanish later ruled it, and in 1704 it was captured by Anglo-Dutch forces during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 confirmed it as British territory, and despite sieges and disputes, it remained a strategic fortress for centuries. During World War II, its tunnels and position at the strait gave it enormous military importance. Today, Gibraltar blends British, Spanish, and Mediterranean influences into a compact, sun-bright mosaic, with the famous monkeys presiding over the summit like furry ambassadors of the Rock.
