Home Video History of Mission Impossible (1996)
#missionimpossible #physicalmedia This video discusses the overall video release history of the Mission Impossible franchise by Paramount from the days of Laserdisc and VHS, through the various reissues tied to the sequels and then those film's entries onto video, the HDDVD and early Blu-ray releases, the continual recycling of the very dated USA 2007 Blu-rays of 1-3, the re-encoded import Blu-rays and all the way to the current 4K UHD presentations of 1-6. I also discuss how the first film's theatrical audio mix was altered first for the 1998 DVD and all subsequent reissues across formats. The original theatrical audio in 2.0 and 5.1 had much more low end bass and LFE to it which I have confirmed by theatrical print screenings. I really miss it and sadly it is not even to be found in the DTS-HDMA and Dolby TrueHD lossless presentations. Only the Laserdisc release has the theatrical audio intact in both 5.1 and 2.0 matrix. The VHS edition has it as well on its 2.0 Dolby Surround matrix hifi stereo track. 00:00:00 Intro goof 00:01:26 Introduction 03:37 1996 VHS with theatrical 2.0 hifi audio 05:30 1996 Letterboxed VHS 05:40 1996 Letterboxed Laserdisc with theatrical 5.1 and 2.0 audio 20:23 Pan and Scan USA Laserdisc 20:32 Japanese letterboxed Laserdisc 25:10 My third Laserdisc copy 26:11 1998 DVD non-anamorphic and pan n scan-this is where the audio remixing begins 32:16 2000 M:I2 original DVD release, VHS and Japan late release Laserdisc 33:57 2006 Special Collector's Edition DVD remaster of 1 and 2 as an M:I3 tie in 39:08 HD-DVD and Blu-ray of 1-3 42:23 M:I 2007 USA Blu-ray 44:00 Paramount's continual recycling of the same inferior 2007 Blu-ray of 1-3 to this day 45:05 The hard to find import re-encoded Blu-rays of 1-3 with DTS HDMA 5.1 audio and 1-4 boxset for Ghost Protocol 50:55 Mention of M:I 3 bonus DVD exclusive extras 51:53 Mention of Ghost Protocol exclusive Best Buy Blu-ray edition extras 52:50 Reissues for Rogue Nation: 2007 BDs of 1-3 recycled YET AGAIN 54:15 Rogue Nation exclusive Target edition extras 55:51 Fallout and the 1-6 UHD boxset.....and the return of the 2007 BDs of 1-3....YET AGAIN 58:57 The UHDs...and their True HD 5.1 audio for 1-3 which is lesser than the import BDs....and still without the theatrical audio of 1...and no new extras 01:03:37 The standalone 25th Anniversary Blu-ray reissue of M:I which is finally a remastered Blu-ray from the new 4K master 01:06:46 Ultimately the UHD has the best picture quality of the first film but the Laserdisc has the theatrical audio mix 01:09:44 Final Summary
