Lehigh Valley Railroad Caboose 95023 moves to Lehighton, PA
This chronicles the overland move of LVRR caboose the short distance from Jim Thorpe PA to Lehighton PA. Jim Thorpe is the county seat of Carbon with lots of weekday traffic. It is also know as the Switzerland of Pennsylvania as the town is located in a picturesque gorge formed by the Lehigh River and attracts many tourists on weekends. The trip from Jim Thorpe to Lehighton requires climbing the steep road that accesses the town. The local authorities wanted the move to start no later than 7 am on a weekday to mitigate any traffic problems in the area. Day one was used to prep the caboose for the move and load it on a lowboy trailer, the trucks were loaded on a second trailer. Because of the steep grades involved, blocking, bracing and tie down method was of extreme importance. Day two started at the stroke of 7 am with the caravan leaving the municipal parking lot where the the two trailers were staged the prior day. The move went smoothly and much faster than originally planned for. The crane had been moved from Jim Thorpe the previous day and was in position and ready for the lift. A short section of track to accept the caboose had been constructed earlier in the month The caboose was in place before noon owing to the expertise and planning of the team. Hope you enjoy.
