A 250 años de la Independencia de Estados Unidos
The United States has already begun celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence. On July 4, 1776, a group of men gathered in Philadelphia signed a document that was, in principle, nothing more than a declaration of independence. Thirteen colonies informed the British Crown that they were leaving, that they no longer recognized its authority, and that from that moment on they would be free and independent. But what remained was not only the independence of the United States of America. A phrase that is still quoted, discussed, and questioned today remains: that all men are created equal, and that they have rights that no government can take away: the right to life, the right to liberty, and the right to the pursuit of happiness. And a political consequence of this remains: if rights precede government, then government is only legitimate when the citizens consent to it. That text had consequences that its authors did not foresee. It inspired the French Revolution and the Latin American independence movements, and inaugurated a model of nationhood based on ideas rather than ethnicity or territory. In the 18th century, this was a radical novelty. But there are interpretations that qualify this epic narrative. For some historians, the declaration was not a program for social transformation but a justification of local autonomy against central power: its authors distrusted strong government as much as they distrusted the monarchy. And the original contradiction is difficult to ignore: it was signed by men who were mostly slave owners, and the equality they proclaimed did not include enslaved Africans, women, or Indigenous peoples. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Become a member of this channel to enjoy exclusive benefits: https://www.youtube.com/EnPerspectiva...
