This study presents a linguistic and theological re-reading of the word "yestehziu" in verses 14 and 15 of Surah Al-Baqarah. It is argued that the traditional translation of "Allah mocks them" is inappropriate for the divine authority, and attention is drawn to the word's etymological meanings of contempt and disregard. Through an analysis of the attributive suffix in Arabic grammar, it is argued that Allah is not the perpetrator of this action, but rather the target and object of the hypocrites' arrogant behavior.
