SLAM vs TLS – Can a 40-Min Scan Detect Real Construction Errors? | FJD Reality Capture Stories

We took part in FJD Reality Capture Stories — a competition organised by FJDynamics to find the best practical application of a SLAM scanner. Our project involved a real-world field test at a multi-storey commercial building under construction. We used two 3D scanners: the mobile FJD Trion S1 and the stationary Faro Focus M70. We overlaid the point clouds from both devices onto the design drawings and checked where reality diverged from the design — in other words, we carried out a full analysis of as-built versus design deviations. Is a mobile SLAM scanner capable of detecting the same construction errors as a high-precision stationary scanner? Does the difference in accuracy matter in real-world construction conditions? And how long does it really take to scan an entire building? You’ll find the answer in the video. If you think this comparison is valuable for the surveying and construction industries — please vote for us in the FJD Reality Capture Stories competition. Every vote counts. 🙏 #FJDTrion #RealityCaptureStories #ScanToBIM #LiDAR #SLAM #Photogrammetry #RealityCapture #FJDynamics #PointCloud #AsBuilt #Construction
