Core aeration consists of extracting small plugs (cores) of soil and thatch with a lawn aerator. ( about 300-400 holes/m2 ) This soil aeration process is much more effective than drilling holes in the soil alone. Aeration is an important ally in achieving a healthy lawn and maximizing the results of your maintenance program. It is important to know that the soil is constantly moving, and that if your soil is sufficiently aerated at the time of seeding, rain, trampling and the passage of the lawnmower will crush the soil. The soil becomes more and more compact until it is no longer conducive to the development of a quality lawn By decompacting the soil, the aeration of the lawn promotes the circulation of air, water and nutrients to the root zone much more efficiently. It provides a favorable environment for microorganisms to grow and contribute fully to the health of the lawn. When coring, it is best to work on slightly damp soil to facilitate the penetration of the spikes into the soil. The turf should be covered evenly. A double pass may be necessary if the soil is very compacted in areas of heavy traffic and foot traffic. The cores can be reused as topsoil or added to the compost. On a tall lawn they can be left on the lawn, they contain beneficial microorganisms that will help break down the excess thatch and will disappear in 7 to 10 days or with the next mowing.
