Nevado Yanapaccha 5,460m (Day 2)

Nevado Yanapaccha (5,460 m) May 28–29, 2025 I finally made it to Huaraz, Ancash, Peru (3,052 m)—the gateway to the majestic Cordillera Blanca. With bigger climbs on the horizon, I chose Nevado Yanapaccha as my first objective to help acclimatize and ease into the high-altitude environment. This was a two-day expedition into one of the most scenic corners of the Cordillera Blanca. Day 1 I woke up at 5 a.m. and took a bus to the town of Yumgay, then transferred to a second, much bumpier ride that took us up to Km 42 (4,700 m). The road climbed steeply, offering a preview of the altitude challenges ahead. From Km 42, my climbing partner Edgar and I hiked about 3 km to Campo Morrena (4,950 m). We gained roughly 300 meters in elevation, and the hike took us 2 to 3 tough hours thanks to the thin mountain air. Once at camp, we had lunch and spent the afternoon on the glacier practicing with our gear and getting comfortable on the ice. Day 2 We began our summit push at 2 a.m., navigating the glacier under a star-filled sky. By 6 a.m., we stood on the summit of Yanapaccha (5,460 m). Surrounded by the towering, snow-covered giants of the Cordillera Blanca, the views were absolutely breathtaking. Trip Summary • Day 1: Drive from Huaraz to Km 42 (approx. 3 hours), then hike to Campo Morrena (2–3 hours). • Day 2: Climb from Campo Morrena to the summit, descend to camp, and return to Huaraz.
