Things can't go on like this, said Toni Bortoluzzi, Vice President of the SVP Zurich after the election campaign. The Bernese mentality has taken hold, and the SVP has become sluggish. Fundamental corrections are needed. And one must also ask whether Albert Rösti is still the right president. The SVP is the big loser in the 2019 federal elections. It plummeted by 3.8 percent, and the party lost 12 seats in the National Council. A resounding slap in the face for the SVP, so used to success. Party President Albert Rösti said that they cannot and should not be satisfied with this result. At the same time, both he and SVP campaign manager Adrian Amstutz never tired of emphasizing that their party remains the strongest force in the country. Has the SVP simply fallen victim to climate hype, as Amstutz explained? Or do the party's problems run much deeper? The SVP has rested on its record results of 2015 for the past four years, says Toni Bortoluzzi, vice president of the Zurich cantonal party, a former National Council member, and a longtime companion and confidant of Christoph Blocher. "The Bernese mentality has taken hold," Bortoluzzi asserts. The party has become sluggish. It no longer works with commitment. "We need to be more assertive again, not simply manage success; that's not enough in politics," says Bortoluzzi. Reporter Simon Christen followed Toni Bortoluzzi and the Zurich SVP through the election campaign. The disappointing result clearly shows that things cannot continue like this, Bortoluzzi believes. The Zurich SVP must regain more influence nationally and "help initiate the necessary corrections." When asked whether Albert Rösti is still the right president, Bortoluzzi replies: "Of course, one has to go over the books here too: whether it can still tolerate a president who has lost such a large share of the vote, or whether one should say that a fundamental renewal is needed."
