The Trinity – One God in Three Distinct Persons (Summary) The doctrine of the Trinity teaches that there is one God who exists eternally as three distinct Persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. While this truth is beyond complete human understanding, it is revealed throughout Scripture and accepted by faith. The Trinity is a divine mystery because finite human minds cannot fully comprehend the infinite nature of God. As Hebrews 11:6 teaches, faith comes before understanding. We believe God’s revelation even when we cannot fully explain it. The Bible reveals both the unity and distinction within God. John 1:1 shows that the Word (Jesus) was with God and was God. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, yet they are not separate gods. They share one divine nature, one will, one purpose, and work together in perfect unity. Although each Person has a unique role, all three participate in every divine work: The Father is often associated with creation. The Son is the Redeemer who brings salvation. The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier who transforms believers. Scripture also shows the Persons of the Trinity testifying about one another. At Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16–17), the Father declared His pleasure in the Son while the Holy Spirit descended like a dove. Jesus continually revealed and honored the Father, and He taught that the Holy Spirit would come to guide believers into truth and testify about Him. This mutual testimony demonstrates perfect unity, relationship, and love within the Godhead. The Trinity is not three gods, nor is it one God merely appearing in different forms at different times. Rather, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are eternally distinct Persons who exist in perfect fellowship. All three are uncreated, eternal, and equal in glory and majesty. While the term “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible, the doctrine is clearly revealed throughout Scripture. Hints appear in the Old Testament, while the New Testament provides clearer revelation through passages such as Matthew 28:19, 2 Corinthians 13:14, and the baptism of Jesus. The Trinity is actively involved in every aspect of God’s work, including creation, sustaining life, sanctification, and resurrection. Salvation itself is Trinitarian: The Holy Spirit convicts people of sin. The Father draws them to Himself. The Son saves through His redemptive work. The Holy Spirit continues to work in believers by convicting of sin, leading into righteousness, and transforming hearts into Christ’s likeness. Ultimately, the doctrine of the Trinity reveals that God is both one and relational. He is not discovered through human reasoning but revealed through Scripture. Though we may never fully understand the mystery of the Trinity, we can fully trust God, worship Him, and embrace the fullness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
