There is a very thrilling folk tale in Murshidabad surrounding the death of Ajimunnisa Begum and her burial, due to which many people believe that she was given a "living grave". Popular folklore (Why did the story of the living grave spread?) According to local history and folklore of Murshidabad, Ajimunnisa Begum once fell very ill. The royal doctors prepared a special medicine to cure her, the main ingredient of which was the fresh liver of young children. After she recovered after taking this medicine, she developed a terrible addiction to eating human liver. She secretly caught and killed young children from the kingdom and continued to eat the broth or medicine made from their liver. Later, her husband Nawab Shujauddin Khan and father Nawab Murshid Quli Khan came to know this chilling truth. As a punishment for Begum's extreme cruelty and wickedness and to appease the anger of the subjects, the Nawab secretly ordered her to be buried alive under this staircase. Based on this folk tale, many people call the place "Jant Kabar" or "Kalija Khaki Begum's Tomb".
