Germans Couldn't Stop This B-17's "Secret" Weapon — Until He Destroyed All 17 Planes

#ww2records #ww2history #wwii Why one wounded B-17 tail gunner refused to leave his position during World War II—and became one of the deadliest bomber gunners in the skies over Europe. July 30, 1943. Staff Sergeant Michael Arooth was stationed in the tail of the B-17 Flying Fortress “Tondelayo” as the 379th Bomb Group flew toward its target in Germany. Then Luftwaffe fighters struck the formation from behind. German cannon fire ripped through Arooth’s position. One of his machine guns jammed, his oxygen line was severed, and the aircraft’s interphone stopped working. An exploding shell wounded him as the pilot threw the damaged bomber through violent evasive maneuvers. Every instinct told him to abandon the tail. Arooth kept firing. Unable to communicate with the crew and struggling for oxygen, he tracked each approaching fighter through the shattered rear compartment. During the attack, he destroyed three German aircraft and continued defending the bomber until the enemy formation finally broke away. His actions that day earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. Across his combat missions, Arooth accumulated one of the highest aerial victory totals attributed to an American bomber gunner, although surviving records disagree on the final number. Weeks later, “Tondelayo” was shot down during another mission and forced to ditch in the English Channel. Arooth suffered head injuries but survived with the rest of the crew. This is the true story of Michael Arooth—the B-17 tail gunner who turned the most isolated position aboard a Flying Fortress into a deadly defensive weapon.
