Our Flag Means Death has quickly won over a spot at my favourite shows this year. Besides using the popular trope of pirates, it reinvents pirates by exploring modern-day issues that still contribute to men's mental health. The use of absurdist comedy only enhances this show as it allows for the relationships between characters like Stede and Blackbeard to flow in a less realistic way while still approaching matters realistically - if that makes sense. Why Our Flag Means Death is great? Because there are pirates, queer people, no queerbaiting, approaches bullying and toxic masculinity, and it's mostly hilarious except when it makes you want to cry after the writers decided to break our hearts. For the history nerds, both main characters are based on infamous real-life pirates who earned their fame. Stede Bonet was an early 18th-century Barbadian pirate, also known as the Gentleman Pirate because he was a moderately wealthy land-owner before turning to a life of crime. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies. So, pirate fans like myself can feel happy about having a portrayal of famous pirates while also seeing the queer community part of pirates represented. 🏳️‍🌈 IMDB Synopsis: "The year is 1717.
