More than 10 thousand years ago, their ancestors penetrated from the White Sea depression into the Karelian glacial sea. Subsequently, this ancient reservoir turned into Lake Ladoga. The animals acclimatized to the new body of water, and over thousands of years a new subspecies formed. A hundred years ago, the population of the Ladoga seal was 20 thousand seals. As a result of uncontrolled human activity, it is steadily declining. Now between two and five thousand seals live in the lake. By the beginning of summer, most of the seal population accumulates in the area of the Valaam archipelago. The Valaam archipelago is rightly called the pearl of the Russian North. The archipelago consists of more than 50 islands. First of all, it is famous for the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, located on its banks. The microclimate of the archipelago is unique. In summer, there are 30-35 more sunny days on Valaam than on the mainland. This is a time of short nights, the shortest of which lasts just over three hours.
