This used to be Northland Center (sometimes referred to as Northland Mall, or Northland Shopping Center), which is one of the oldest shopping malls in American history. Northland is often called "the oldest shopping mall", and whilst this isn't true (Trajan's Market in Rome, was the first ever recorded enclosed mall; Westminster Arcade in Providence was the first enclosed US mall; and Park Royal in metro Vancouver was the first suburban mall), it's still an incredibly important mall to the history of malls. Thus when Northland Center was abandoned in 2015, it was a huge blow to shopping malls. Northland opened as the first "super regional shopping center" in Michigan, but it was planned to open alongside Southland Center, Eastland Center, and the Westland Shopping Center malls; which all were eventually built. The competition in the Detroit area was steep which helped this mall's decline; but the decline of the local area and the "Fall of Detroit" did more to contribute to Northland's decline. Eventually other malls and not just Northland would close and become abandoned; such as the Eastland Center, Summit Place Mall, and Lakeside Mall. Many of the local malls are still around to this day though such as Fairlane Town Center, Oakland Mall, the Somerset Collection, Macomb Mall, Westland Mall, and Briarwood Mall.
