If I Had Only a Balcony... The Garden I'd Build to Never Buy Vegetables Again
Say the only growing space you had was a balcony. Not an acre, not a backyard, not even a proper garden. Just a rail, a bit of floor, and a wall that catches the sun. Could you stop buying vegetables? Here is the honest answer, because that honesty is the whole point: you will not grow wheat, or press your own oil, or raise an animal out there. But there is one section of the store you can quit almost entirely, and it is the one you refill every single week: the produce aisle. The fresh vegetables, greens, and herbs you buy, wilt half of, and buy again. That whole aisle can move out onto a balcony. This is the garden I would actually build, step by step, if a balcony were all I had, in the order I would plant it. It starts with the crops that hit your basket most often (leafy greens, beans up the wall, tomatoes in deep pots, fresh herbs on the rail), then the crops everyone swears need a yard (roots in deep tubs, cucumbers and peppers trained up a string), and ends with the winter layer that keeps it feeding you when the store is at its most expensive. Then the part that ties it together: the succession system that means you never let a pot sit empty, so the produce aisle quietly stops being necessary. It was never really about the acre. It is about how hard each square foot works. 🪴 New here? This is part eleven of the container series. Pick one to start this week: the greens pay you back the fastest, the herbs save you the most per ounce, and the radishes give you a harvest in under a month. 📦 The gear worth buying once (rail planters and deep grow bags, a quality potting mix, a trellis and clips for vertical crops, seed-starting and microgreen trays) is linked below.
