In search of St Piran! Our visit to Perranporth, Cornwall Circular walk

In this week's video we explore Penhale Dunes in search of the Oratory of St Piran. St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall and is said to have landed on Perranporth Beach in the 6th century and founded a christian oratory and collegiate site. In the 12th century, a second site was chosen to build a church dedicated to St Piran. Over the centuries, the two sites have been exposed and buried repeatedly. In Victorian times, the oratory in particular attracted a lot of attention from archaeologists and tourists. Organised archaeological digs have helped to understand their relevance, especially to the Cornish as a 'nation' and the various decisions about how to protect the site can be understood. After exploring the dunes, we head to the coast - three miles of golden sand to enjoy! After a wander around the town, sampling some ice cream, we make our way back to the car.
