SCHOPENHAUER : 9 LEÇONS SOMBRES SUR LE TEMPS

For those who are awake. No one tells you that the present barely exists—that it is a vanishing boundary between what is no more and what is not yet. No one tells you that everything you love is already passing away, at the very moment you love it. No one tells you that the very passage of time is, paradoxically, what makes each moment precious. Arthur Schopenhauer said it—with a dizzying clarity. In "The World as Will and Representation" (1819) and "Parerga und Paralipomena," Schopenhauer confronted time head-on: the present as a sliver of thickness, loss as the structure of all existence, and waiting and regret that steal from us the only real moment. And at the end of this terrible lucidity, an unexpected peace: it is not in spite of impermanence, but through its acceptance, that the capacity to fully cherish what is is born. In this 45-minute video, an old philosopher and his young student explore Schopenhauer's nine somber lessons on time: ▸ Lesson 1 — The present hardly exists; it is a vanishing boundary ▸ Lesson 2 — Everything you love is already passing away; loss is the rule, not the exception ▸ Lesson 3 — Time speeds up with age; novelty expands it, routine contracts it ▸ Lesson 4 — Perpetual waiting steals the present from you; he who waits to live never lives ▸ Lesson 5 — Regretting the past is as futile as waiting for the future ▸ Lesson 6 — Nothing you possess will satisfy you lastingly; Only what you are escapes wear and tear ▸ Lesson 7 — Awareness of time is the price of our intelligence ▸ Lesson 8 — What matters is not duration, but depth ▸ Lesson 9 — Making peace with time means cherishing what passes, because it passes Schopenhauer didn't write to make you anxious about the fleeting nature of time. He wrote to free you from the losing battle against impermanence—and to show you that the very fragility of what passes is what makes it precious. -- 📌 YOUR EXERCISE TONIGHT: Before you fall asleep, look at something you love—a person, a place, an object—and remember that it won't last forever. Then ask yourself: Do I truly cherish what I have been given now, or do I take it for granted, believing it will last? The answer might change how you look at tomorrow morning. Write in the comments which of the nine lessons resonated with you most deeply. Not the brightest one. The most uncomfortable one. Because the most uncomfortable one is the one you need right now. --- 📚 About this video: No self-help. No "5-step time management." Just Schopenhauer—the philosopher who faced time head-on and didn't sugarcoat anything. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) lived in Frankfurt. "The World as Will and Representation" was published in 1819. He died on September 21, 1860—at the end of a period of time he had, better than anyone else, learned to understand. --- 🔔 Subscribe to The Abyss of Meaning for weekly journeys into the depths of thought.
