While the number of young smokers has been declining for years, the facts about alcohol consumption among German teenagers are alarming: 20 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds get drunk at least once a month. Almost every weekend, the pediatric day clinic in Hanover experiences an "alcohol alert." Up to eight intoxicated teenagers are admitted to the children's hospital in a single night. "Vodka, beer, all sorts of things" had done the trick for the teenager at a party. He's still somewhat responsive and is receiving the "standard treatment" from the nurse: blood pressure and temperature checks, an IV with glucose solution, a waterproof pad under his head, and a diaper. "They vomit and they wet the bed," the nurse knows from experience. Mark falls into a deep sleep and will sleep off his intoxication in the children's hospital until the next morning. "It's really embarrassing for them when they wake up the next morning with a diaper on their bottom," says the nurse, "but they're supposed to be embarrassed.
