From pop musicians to hard rockers to heavy thrash metal bands—many musicians across a wide range of genres agree that the band led by Lemmy Kilmister was arguably the hardest-hitting and most authentic rock ‘n’ roll band of all time. In 2014, Motörhead performed in Düsseldorf, where Rockpalast recorded their concert. Yet what led to the founding of Motörhead in 1975 could hardly be considered a blueprint for an exemplary career: Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, singer and bassist for the rock band Hawkwind, was arrested by Mexican border police for drug possession during a North American tour—whereupon his bandmates had to post bail for him and subsequently fired him on the spot due to the problems he had caused. Kilmister, however, returned to England, where he quickly assembled a new band—Motörhead was born. The band’s self-titled 1977 debut quickly earned the English trio a reputation for playing loud, raw, and dirty. Initially active as a hard rock and heavy metal band (and already very successful), the musicians were swept up by the punk wave toward the end of the 1970s and began writing increasingly faster songs. Speed metal was born! Over the course of their career, Motörhead weathered several lineup changes, a stint in prison, a broken neck that ended without serious consequences, and many other typical rock-and-roll meltdowns, while simultaneously setting musical standards in the metal genre with studio albums like “Ace of Spades” and ‘1916’ as well as the live album “No Sleep 'til Hammersmith.” Throughout the many stages of their long career, they varied and enriched their work with additional styles and influences, though their roots always remained in rock ’n’ roll, blues rock, and Lemmy’s unwavering love for the Beatles. Lemmy and the band toured with Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper, among others, and in 1994 played a legendary concert in Argentina alongside the Ramones in front of 45,000 people. Thanks to their revolutionary musical pioneering work in speed and thrash metal and their decades-long stylistic consistency, Motörhead earned the status of living legends—until the seemingly indestructible Lemmy Kilmister died in late 2015, leaving a massive void in the heart of rock ‘n’ roll. 📸 Thumbnail photos: WDR/Thomas von der Heiden #Motörhead #Düsseldorf #rockpalast ----- 🎬 More Rockpalast: ► Rockpalast in the ARD Media Library: https://www.ardmediathek.de/sendung/r... ► Rockpalast website and archive: https://www.wdr.de/tv/rockpalast/
