Mubarak started off her career with music recitals for All India Radio(AIR), but, went on to sing over 178 songs in Hindi films. She collaborated with composers like S.D. Burman and Salil Choudhary. She was considered part of a generation that laid impetus on tone, texture and style of singing. Begum was heavily inspired by the singing of Suraiya and Noor Jehan. Mubarak Begum lent her voice to evergreen songs like Hum haal-e-dil sunaiyenge (Madhumati; 1958), Mujhko Apne Gale Laga Lo (Hamrahi;1963), Neend udd jaye teri, chainse sone wale (Juaari; 1968). She sung in a number of genres especially Ghazals. An artiste of such caliber, at the pinnacle of her career till mid 60s, she vanished from the scene in an era when singers used to enjoy success curve lasting for four to five decades. “I didn’t know hobnobbing,” she once said in an interview. Eulogized in her death, if she could, she would say, to the industry that forced the sun to set on her before her evening. The film featured the director's son Ashok Sharma in the main role along with Tanuja. Ashok on the pretence that he has a family manages to rent accomodation at a young widow’s (Hari) house. He draws her out and tells her he had lied about his marital status and that he will leave the house. However, the young widow allows him to stay. While on a business trip, at a fair, he meets the young Manorama(Tanuja) who is being chased by the police for stealing trinkets. She tells Ashok that she is an orphan who was forced to beg, but now makes earning as a singer. Mano adds that though she's poor she's fond of jewellery and fancy clothes. Hari's in-laws ask her to get Ashok to leave as it casts aspersions on the young widow staying alone with a single man. She decides to go to her mother-in-law's place, in spite of knowing that she will be treated badly there. Manorama enters Ashok's life again as a thief. He instead employs her to cook for him and stay with the other house help. He also takes on the onus of educating Mano and her brother. Ashok and Mano grow to like each other. When Ashok's boss visits the house, he gets interested in Mano and she goes away with him, attracted by the wealth. Ashok's health deteriorates when he gets pneumonia and Hari Devi comes back to nurse him. On hearing this, an infuriated Mano rushes to the house, but Ashok dies of his illness, leaving Mano desolate. This lovely song sung so feelingly by Mubarak Begum simply lifts you away to another world. The root essence of this song is the display of loneliness and solitude. What is this loneliness or akelapan or tanhai about? In today’s COVID-19 era many people are suffering from depression, job loss, loneliness and unrequited love. Sahir Ludhianvi, to whom this chanel is dedicated, has some antidotes to offer. Though he was outwardly an atheist, reveals to us through his poetry, that he knew Bhagavad Gita inside out.
