Then his relatives, then his nation, then living creatures, then the universe, the world. He is interested in each of these spheres; he can delight in their pleasures and grieve with their pains. However, since nothing remains stable in this chaotic world and the circling winds, the wretched heart of man is constantly wounded. When his hands cling to things, those things go and tear his hands, perhaps even sever them. He remains in constant agony. Or he becomes intoxicated with heedlessness. Since this is so, O soul, if you possess the intellect, gather all that love and give it to its true owner, and be saved from these calamities. These infinite loves are reserved for the owner of infinite perfection and beauty. Only when you give them to your true owner can you love all things in His name and as His mirrors, without suffering. Therefore, this love should not be spent directly on the universe. Otherwise, love, while being a most delicious blessing, becomes a most painful affliction. There remains one aspect, and the most important of all is this: O soul, you spend your love on your own self. You make your own self your god and beloved. You sacrifice everything to your self. You are, in essence, granting it a kind of divinity. Whereas the cause of love is either perfection—for perfection is loved in itself—or it is benefit, or pleasure, or goodness; or love is done for a reason like these. Now, O soul, we have proven with certainty in a few Words that your true nature is molded from flaw, defect, poverty, and impotence; that just as darkness shows the brightness of light in proportion to the degree of darkness, so, by contrast, you become a mirror with them to the perfection, beauty, power, and mercy of the Glorious Creator. Therefore, O soul, you should not love your soul, but rather hostility, or pity, or, after being at peace, you should be compassionate. If you love your soul—because your soul is the source of pleasure and benefit; You too are captivated by the pleasures of pleasure and benefit—do not prefer that atomic pleasure and benefit of the soul to infinite pleasures and benefits. Do not be like a star insect. For it drowns all its friends and the things it loves in the wilderness of darkness and is content with a tiny glimmer in its soul. For, along with the pleasure and benefit of your soul, you must love a Pre-eternal Beloved who is subject to the benefits, blessings, and favors of all beings and the entire universe, with whom you are connected, whose benefits you enjoy, and whose happiness you rejoice in—so that you may be delighted by both your own and all their happiness, and receive the infinite pleasure you derive from love of the absolute perfection. Anyway, your intense love for His essence, which you misuse and spend on your own essence, is love for His essence, which you misuse and spend on your own essence. In which case, tear apart the ego in your soul and show Huwa. And all your loves scattered throughout the universe is a love given to His names and attributes; you have misused it and are suffering the penalty. Because the punishment for illicit love not spent appropriately is a merciless calamity.
