Tracing Remains of the Langsett Railway
We're back in South Yorkshire this week. Just north of the steel city of Sheffield is the steel town of Stocksbridge. A mainstay of the steel industry. But we're here to investigate what is left of a railway that served in the building of a series of reservoirs in the area - mainly the Langsett Reservoir. The Langsett Railway, of Sheffield Corporation Railway, named after the Sheffield division who built it, runs for 3.5 miles from Stocksbridge, up the the reservoir. It linked with the Stocksbridge Railway at Samuel Fox works in the heart of Stocksbride, which in turn met the main GCR (or Woodhead line as it was later known) at Deepcar. Langsett reservoir provided water to Sheffield & Barnsley area. Furhter downstream are the Midhope and Underbank reservoirs, the latter of which is where we start our explore. The railway was built between 1897 and 1898 and was interesting in that it had dual gauge - standard gauge and 3ft rails. ***You can become a channel member for just £1.99 a month.
