The Dark Story of Britain's Most Cursed Country House: Highclere
The Dark Story of Britain's Most Cursed Country House: Highclere In 1922, a semi-invalid English earl knelt beside a sealed door in the Valley of the Kings. He had spent fifteen years and a Rothschild fortune digging in the Egyptian sand and finding nothing. His archaeologist held a candle through a hole in the plaster. "Can you see anything?" the Earl asked. "Yes, wonderful things." Five months later, Lord Carnarvon was dead — killed by a mosquito bite he nicked while shaving. The newspapers blamed a pharaoh's curse. Arthur Conan Doyle blamed supernatural "elementals." Howard Carter called it tommy rot. A study in The Lancet confirmed that of the 25 Westerners who entered the tomb, Carnarvon was the only one to die. But the real story of Highclere Castle — the 300-room Gothic fantasy that the world now knows as Downton Abbey — is stranger than any curse. It begins with the Bishops of Winchester in 749 AD. It passes through Capability Brown, the Houses of Parliament architect Charles Barry, and a Colonial Secretary who planned the expansion of the British Empire from the Library. Then a reckless young earl crashes a car in Germany, marries the illegitimate daughter of a Rothschild banker for her £500,000 dowry, and uses the money to fund the greatest archaeological discovery of the twentieth century. After his death, his son was so furious about losing a lawsuit over Tutankhamun's treasures that he banned all mention of Egypt, hid 300 artefacts in secret cupboards, and forbade anyone to speak the word. They stayed hidden for 70 years — until a 75-year-old butler said: "Except for the Egyptian stuff, my lord." By 2009, the castle was falling apart. Fifty rooms uninhabitable. Ceilings collapsed. The family living in a cottage. Then Julian Fellowes called. 282 million people watched Downton Abbey. And a television show saved a house that a pharaoh's gold could not. 🔔 Subscribe for more investigations into the hidden histories behind Britain's greatest landmarks. 💬 Which property should we investigate next?
