Carved directly into a hillside, this dugout starts as a simple underground frame but quickly turns into a much more complex build. The structure is partially buried, with a timber roof supported by thick vertical logs, forming a low-profile shelter that blends into the terrain. Working on this kind of slope isn’t forgiving — the weight of the earth, the angle of the ground, and the load on the roof all have to be balanced, or the whole thing risks shifting over time. Inside, the walls are built using log cross-sections (wood rounds). This isn’t just decorative — each piece has to be cut, fitted, and packed tightly to avoid gaps. It’s slow, repetitive work, but it creates dense, insulated walls that help retain heat inside the shelter. The centerpiece of the build is a large masonry fireplace, constructed from scratch. This is where things get technically tricky: — airflow has to be correct for proper draft — the structure must handle high temperatures without cracking — and everything has to fit within a confined underground space If the chimney isn’t right, smoke doesn’t go out — it comes back in. So this part is less “bushcraft improvisation” and more real construction logic, just without modern tools. What starts as a basic dugout turns into a functional underground living space, combining earth, wood, and stone into something that’s built not just to exist — but to actually survive cold conditions.
