407 fusilados y Mujeres de Negro | Memorial de La Barranca (La Rioja)

July 17-18, 1936. A faction of the Spanish army revolts against the Republic. The coup fails to gain traction in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia. Its failure will trigger a tremendous and protracted civil war that will ravage Spain for three years, and the victory of the rebels will result in a long dictatorship. On July 19, the rebel army seizes control of the city of Logroño. Two days later, with reinforcements of troops and Carlist militia arriving from Navarre, the entire region is in the hands of the rebels. The province of Logroño will henceforth be in the rear guard. There is no battlefront here, however… Nevertheless, almost 2,000 people will be murdered between July and December 1936. More than 400 of these people are buried in La Barranca. Their widows, the Women in Black, pay homage to them every year in La Barranca, Lardero.
