Mirinae Shrine, a Catholic Village Becomes a Milky Way | Planning / Production | Suwon Diocese Public Relations Department | Filming / Editing / Narration | A Pilgrim (Peter Lee Min-ho) | Text (Description) | Andrea Daegeon Lee Seon-gyu Mirinae Shrine originated as a Christian village formed by Catholics living in the Naepo region of Chungcheong Province who had secretly fled to escape persecutions of various magnitude, such as the Sinyu and Gihae Persecutions. Mirinae Shrine includes the Church of the Canonization of 103 Korean Martyrs and St. Joseph's Church, built in 1907 by the first parish priest, Father Marco Do-yeong Kang, the third priest ordained in Korea. At the very top of the site stands the Church of the Saint Andrew Kim Daegeon. This memorial chapel was dedicated in 1928 to commemorate the beatification of 79 martyrs, including Father Kim Daegeon, in 1925. Even after over 100 years, it has been repainted and renovated repeatedly, and remains pristine and well-maintained. Previously called a chapel, the Memorial Cathedral has been renamed a Memorial Cathedral since 2020. Furthermore, it has been registered as a National Registered Cultural Property by the Cultural Heritage Administration since January 2023, making it a historical site that clearly demonstrates the development and history of the Catholic Church in Korea, symbolically and locally. In front of the Memorial Cathedral are four graves: those of Father Marco Do-yeong Kang, Father Kim Dae-geon, Bishop Ferréol, who ordained Father Kim Dae-geon, and next to them, Father Peter Choi Mun-sik. Bishop Ferréol, who had a special affection for Father Kim Dae-geon, reportedly left a will before his death, stating, "When I die, do not return to my hometown of France, but be buried next to the holy martyr Father Kim Dae-geon." Furthermore, in a letter he wrote to the head of the Foreign Missions Society after Father Kim Dae-geon's martyrdom, he reportedly wrote, "You priests know how profoundly shocking and sad the loss of this young priest is to me. I loved him as a father loves his child." It is said that after Father Kim Dae-geon's martyrdom, he remained in hiding in Naepo for seven years, researching and compiling information about him and sending it to the Vatican. The gravesite where the two stand side by side is a beautiful space, filled with the unwavering love they shared for each other and the deep respect and affection Bishop Ferréol held for Father Kim Dae-geon as a martyr.
