The WWF in 1996 was a creative disaster. WCW was on fire and Vince McMahon had no answers, relying on cartoon gimmicks, broken-down stars, and weak storytelling. The year started with a limp Royal Rumble, featured the disastrous return of the Ultimate Warrior, and saw Bret Hart walk away after WrestleMania. Vader was buried for upsetting Shawn Michaels, Razor and Diesel were replaced with cheap knockoffs, and a parade of awful midcard acts like TL Hopper and The Goon stunk up Raw every week. The tag division was a joke, Rocky Maivia was booed out of the building, and the WWF nearly got kicked off the air for pulling a gun angle on live TV.
