Kool DJ Red Alert - Kiss FM New York - 28th December 1990
Another tape from my archive – recorded in New York at the end of December 1990. Kool DJ Red Alert is in fine form here, cutting and scratching up a storm. He and Chuck Chillout have been idols of mine ever since I first heard them on LWR pirate radio in London back in the early '80s. Tim Westwood would play some of their Kiss FM mixes during his show, and hearing the New York announcers' voices combined with their incredible DJ skills left a lasting impression on me. I was also a huge fan of Vintertainment Records – the label behind the legendary Hip Hop on Wax series, which featured amazing, militant scratching from both Red Alert and Chuck Chillout. The month before this recording, I somehow managed to blag an invite to Red Alert's private birthday party at a downtown club. Seeing him play live in such a small space was a truly special moment. This mix is from the Rapology section of his show, where he blends old-school joints. At the end, he mentions another show on Kiss FM the following night – going even further back in time. I recorded that one too, and I'll be uploading it soon, so keep an eye out. Subscribe and like, buy me a coffee or check my other music and social links below if you are interested in some of the other stuff I do.
