Xishuangbanna, or Twelve Panna, is located in southern Yunnan Province, China, bordering Laos and Myanmar. It is an autonomous region of the Tai Lue ethnic group. This city has a history spanning thousands of years and was once the center of a kingdom of Tai people whose culture, language, and way of life are very similar to Thailand and Laos. The name "Xishuangbanna" originates from ancient administrative divisions, where "panna" means agricultural area. Therefore, the city has roots in an agricultural society, Theravada Buddhist culture, and traditions similar to those of northern Thailand, such as Songkran, Lanna-style temples, and the simple lifestyle of its people.
