Filipino Sign Language (FSL) is believed to be part of the French Sign Language family. It has been strongly influenced by American Sign Language since the establishment in 1907 of the School for the Deaf and Blind (SDB) - now called, The Philippine School for Deaf Children or PSDC- by Delia Delight Rice who was an American Thomasite teacher born to deaf parents. On October 30, 2018, a law was signed into law by the President of the Philippines declaring Filipino Sign Language as the national sign language for deaf people in both government and private transactions.
