[Summary] ✨ A promise carries a responsibility to fulfill, and it was not God who broke the covenant, but the people. God judged sin according to the covenant, yet he did not completely abandon his people; in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he opened the way for restoration. He is a faithful God to the end. ✨ A promise contains both the things that must be kept and the responsibility that comes with breaking it. Therefore, when a promise is broken, we want to hold the one who broke it accountable. The people refused to listen to God's word and followed other gods. It was the people who broke the covenant, not God. God judged that sin according to the covenant. But judgment was not the end. God did not completely destroy His people. He protected the remnant and left the way open for recovery. Even in the midst of a broken covenant, God continued to keep His promise. He remembered the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and opened the way for restoration. That way of restoration was accomplished through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Word and the fulfillment of God's covenant. Remember the faithful love of God who never abandons us. Embrace that love with your family and neighbors, and live by showing the way to restoration. Jeremiah 11:1-13 [Body of Message Summary] Theme Summary: This passage depicts the event of the covenant breaking between God and Israel, and makes clear that it was the people, not God, who broke the covenant. After leading the people out of Egypt, God commanded, "Hear my voice." At the heart of the covenant was the relationship that God would be their God and they would be God's people. The people of Judah refused to listen to God's word, returned to the sins of their ancestors, and served other gods. God did not treat the sin of breaking the covenant lightly, but spoke of calamity and judgment from which they would not escape. Yet, God did not end everything with judgment; He protected the remnant and opened the way for restoration. God's faithfulness is not about ignoring sin, but about the love that calls the sinner onto the path of restoration even while clearly handling sin. This faithfulness was fulfilled in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Attitude of the People: An Attitude to Adopt: Remembering God's faithfulness in opening the way to restoration even when the people broke the covenant, not forgetting His covenant. An Attitude to Adopt: Remaining in the grace of Jesus Christ, not easily breaking ties with family and neighbors, and working together to open the way to restoration. An Attitude to Be Cautious: A hardened heart that rejects God's Word, clinging to self-made props and idols instead of calling on God. Lessons for Us: God's covenant includes the responsibility of obedience along with the promise. We must honestly look at where we have not heard the Word and followed the hardness of our heart. We must not treat sin lightly, but see the love of God that does not close the way to restoration. We must take hold of the grace in Jesus Christ that makes us God's people again.
