How India Conquered the Harsh Geology of the Himalayas
The Anji Khad Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, built in the harsh and unstable terrain of the Himalayas. Originally planned as a steel arch bridge, the project had to be completely redesigned after engineers discovered that one side of the mountain slope was too weak to withstand the massive horizontal thrust of an arch structure. In this video, we explore how India overcame the extreme geological challenges of the Himalayas to build the Anji Khad Bridge. From its one hundred and ninety-three-meter-high concrete pylon and ninety-six high-strength steel cable stays, to the complex construction process across a deep gorge, this bridge became one of the most impressive engineering achievements of the entire Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway project.
