The Downside of 'Better' Microphones Nobody Tells You About

When I first started recording vocals + acoustic guitar at home, I used the mic I had, a Shure MV7, but I wanted more out of my recordings and I couldn’t figure out what I really needed without spending some money. In this video I take two dynamic microphones (Shure MV7 and Shure SM58) and two condenser microphones (Shure PGA81 and Neumann TLM103), and record the same vocal and acoustic guitar takes with each pair, back to back, so you can actually hear the difference instead of just reading about it. I compare those takes not just raw but with plugins + in a mixed song. I also get into why switching to a condenser mic can be a genuinely humbling experience the first time you hear your own voice through one, and the real trade-offs that come with bringing a condenser into a home setup.
