Ekonom Soroti Masalah Fiskal Terkait Rupiah Tembus Rp 18.000 per Dolar AS

JAKARTA, KOMPASTV - The weakening of the rupiah, which has penetrated the psychological level of Rp18,000 per US dollar, has sparked concern among market players and economists. Responding to this situation, Achmad Nur Hidayat, an economist and public policy expert at the National Development University (UPN) Veteran Jakarta, believes that the rupiah's weakening cannot be considered merely a short-term market sentiment. According to Ahmad, although many global currencies are under pressure against the US dollar, Indonesia's position is among the most affected. "Year to date, the rupiah has weakened by around 7 percent. And I think this is a slap in the face for our economic managers, as we are among the lowest," said Ahmad. He likened the Rp18,000 per US dollar level to a thermometer indicating that the economy is in the red zone. "In fact, if you look at this thermometer, it's already red, meaning we are sick. I think ignoring that we are sick is the problem," he said.
