Seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag tegen mannen in de zorg

After nursing student Finn Roset (22) encountered sexually inappropriate behavior during his hospital internship, he decided to research the topic. He discovered that male nurses encounter it much more often, but that it's often not discussed. He therefore advocated for more attention to the issue. "Well, Mom, two boys at the bedside. That'll probably be a threesome tonight." It was probably meant to be funny, but that remark left Roset with a bad feeling. A relative of an elderly woman made the comment during his hospital internship when he and a fellow student visited her ward. The remark made him completely unwilling to visit the patient. He subsequently talked to other nurses and discovered that similar incidents happen much more often. He therefore decided to conduct research for his studies and discovered that little is known about inappropriate behavior among male nurses. Rosett reads in a scientific study that forty to sixty percent of male nurses experience sexually inappropriate behavior at some point. Yet the vast majority of them don't report this behavior. He wonders why more research isn't being conducted on the subject. "I do think there's a taboo surrounding it. As a man, you're supposed to be strong, you have to be resilient, so you can't be a victim of sexually inappropriate behavior. I think that stereotype means it's rarely discussed," says Roset. "In a situation where you actually want to provide care, these kinds of comments shouldn't be made." He won the Anna Reynvaan Student Award last month for his research. He advocates for more attention to the subject within his program. By sharing his story, he hopes to contribute to a solution. Roset: "If you discuss it with each other, we can do something about it. If it's not discussed, nothing can be done about it." When asked, Amsterdam UMC and OLVG acknowledge the problems surrounding sexually inappropriate behavior among male nurses. According to the hospitals, reporting inappropriate behavior is very important, but it's not always done. "It's a global issue that has our attention," said a spokesperson for Amsterdam UMC. Since September, Amsterdam UMC staff have been able to report inappropriate behavior via a special app. The app is now also being used by other hospitals. "Sometimes inappropriate behavior also stems from a patient's illness or medication use. The topic is regularly discussed within the teams. This is in the hope that staff will raise the alarm sooner when it happens," said a spokesperson for OLVG. Staff are encouraged to address the patient.
