Audio: https://vimeo.com/364716537 San Francisco Symphony Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor "It was two days ago that we premiered the piece you're about to hear this evening, I Still Dance, a virtuoso opening piece for orchestra written by John Adams, and I'm very honoured that it is dedicated to me and to my husband Joshua Robison. We've been asked recently how long we've known John, we don't exactly know, I guess it depends on when you start counting, because I was very aware of John back in the early 70's when we were both living in Boston on opposite sides of the river, and then very much in New York, connected with things happening in Tully Hall and around Lincoln Center, and then with the premiere of his piece Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and lots of first performances that have happened here with the San Francisco Symphony. So I'm very thrilled that on this occasion, that one of the features of my last year as music director, is to have another premiere from John Adams. The youthful energy, he claims, is part of the inspiration behind this, that he thinks Josh and I have, but I think he's the leader of the pack when it comes to youthful energy, as you're about to hear in this super virtuoso piece.
