From a young age, Saint John of Rila decided to dedicate his life to prayer. He renounced worldly life and sought solitude in the Rila Mountains. Over time, many followers and novices joined him. He founded the Rila Monastery, which, throughout the centuries, and especially during the dark years of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, is said to have resembled God more than humans.
