Things haven't always worked out, I think you know what I mean, but this time, this time, everything will work out. And so it goes. You're listening to Golosbezdoka. Harley sales have taken a turn for the worse. Quarter after quarter after quarter, they're bleeding rust. The guys with the orange blood themselves will tell you it's not so bad, earnings per share are growing. Faster than everyone else. What the heck. They're just hoarding shares like a survivalist hoards toilet paper when the shit hits. Let's say earnings per share in '19 were $1.50. And that's what they were. There were 154.3 million shares outstanding, and the payout was $230 million. And now the board has been reduced to 18.2 million shares. Now we're cutting the pie into 136 million pieces, and each share is worth $1.69. Oops, I just plotted a five-year growth curve for Harley-Davidson stock. And who cares that the company hasn't actually made any money? And who cares that the board of directors didn't shortchange themselves; they're getting paid to increase earnings per share. And who cares if it's all just window dressing for the sake of annual reports? You can pull it off once. Or twice. Or three times. Or four. Or... fuck! I've never seen such nonsense. And they bought them out with borrowed money. Or by depleting their cash reserves. Reserves that would be very handy if the economy crashed. Let's say, I don't even know, because of a pandemic? All Harley did was build a higher hill. To roll down. What's going on with Harley-Davidson? Harley's decline is more significant than the overall decline in the US, but all motorcycles are struggling this year. So, Harley's downturn is because motorcycles are downturned? Of course, sales in the US dropped after the 2008 crisis. But for some reason, they're still hanging on. Meanwhile, the economy is taking Viagra, car sales are recovering, even among two-wheelers, enduro and small-displacement bikes have increased. So, the only ones that aren't improving are the large-displacement track bikes. And it seems the price tag isn't the issue, since BMW, Docati, Triumph, and KTM are all priced fairly evenly. So who's causing this deviation? Who's responsible for the majority of big-adventure motorcycle sales in America? Yeah. It's not a sluggish market that's dragging Harley down. It's sluggish Harley sales that are dragging the market down. So yeah, Harley-Davidson is lying there, unresponsive, almost gone cold. But why? Most people will blame me, a millennial. Harley sold its soul for smaller, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly motorcycles, and you're not buying them. Blah, blah, the truth is, Harley killed itself. It wasn't me who came and ruined everything; they took their poison 40 years ago. Directed by Peter Fonda. Easy Rider. Starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Riding a Honda is pure pleasure. It can easily go 50 mph all day, and the whole day will cost you a nickel. I have to admit, you meet the nicest people on Hondas. They're the most popular in the world. Marlon Brando in "The Wild One." But over time, such savages become real boars, a mockery of their former selves, like a dad playing rebel. No matter how devoted you are to a cult, statistics show that older people don't buy many motorcycles. And when they die, they buy even fewer. So in 2008, when the crisis hit, Harley pulled the plug. The XR1200. It looks like a modern retro bike, which should be a hit with the youth. It looks like the most victorious motorcycle in history, the legendary XR750 flat tracker. It handles amazingly, costs a fortune, ten, and no one buys it. But it's an Indian FTR, with a history and in its prime; it's a Ducati Scrambler seven years before the Scrambler.
