When we last talked about Mass Effect, I kept circling the same thought. The project is still moving forward, but it’s doing so at a time when almost everything around BioWare is in flux. Some of you are cautiously excited by the prospect of a new Mass Effect led by trilogy veterans, assuming BioWare can pull it off after a turbulent decade. A lot of you are simply tired. “My face is tired” levels of tired. That tension is basically where the series and the studio sit right now. BioWare is at its lowest ebb in years, trying to build its most important game under creative strain and financial pressure, with a fifty-five billion dollar buyout looming over the whole thing. And in that context, it looks like the studio is preparing to enter the most important, least glamorous, and historically most difficult stage of development.
