Psoriatic Arthritis: Rheumatic or Dermatological Disease? Psoriatic arthritis, a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, affects approximately 300,000 people in Italy. Characterized by joint pain and skin lesions, its progression can be halted thanks to recent developments in pharmaceutical research. However, it remains a significant challenge in patient education, diagnosis, and management. Appropriate treatments are often administered only years after the first symptoms appear, while bone erosion can begin much earlier. In many cases, psoriatic arthritis follows psoriasis, but it can also appear earlier. It is important to recognize the signs of the disease, such as persistent joint pain or tendon inflammation, for an accurate diagnosis. Delayed diagnosis is a significant problem, often caused by a lack of awareness among both patients and physicians. Early diagnosis can prevent irreversible joint destruction and reduce the impact on daily life and work. Collaboration between primary care physicians, dermatologists, and rheumatologists is therefore crucial to ensure rapid and accurate referrals for patients. The treatment of psoriatic arthritis has made great strides, thanks to the introduction of biologics and Janus kinase inhibitors, which offer effective pain control and can slow the progression of joint damage. However, patients' quality of life remains a challenge, as the disease can significantly limit daily activities until properly diagnosed and treated. Patient associations play a key role in providing support, information, and promoting equity in access to care throughout the country. AbbVie's "Neighbors of Skin" campaign aims to raise awareness of psoriatic arthritis, promoting collaboration between specialists for early diagnosis and timely treatment, thus improving the lives of patients affected by this complex condition.
