What happens when you combine today's state-of-the-art technology with the soul of the air-cooled Porsche 911? In this video, I'm exclusively present for the very first dyno run of an engine that was never actually meant to exist: An air-cooled, 4-valve cylinder head, developed for a Porsche boxer engine that was originally water-cooled. REEN is responsible for this extraordinary project – together with one of Germany's most renowned engine developers: Wolfgang Nehse. Wolfgang was responsible for BMW M engines for many years and, as a young engineer at BMW Motorrad, already implemented air-cooled, 4-valve concepts. The special thing about this engine: it's a fully air-cooled, 4-valve cylinder head, which could only be realized thanks to 3D printing. Responsible for this extraordinary project is REEN – together with one of Germany's most renowned engine developers: Wolfgang Nehse. I speak with the developers about the technical idea behind the concept, the challenges of air cooling with 4-valve cylinder heads, the use of 3D printing in high-performance engine construction, temperature and endurance testing on the dynamometer, and why this project represents a potential continuation of Porsche's air-cooled history – albeit initially only in small numbers.
